RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is shifting tourism priorities toward visitor quality rather than visitor quantity nationwide. The policy was emphasized during discussions about Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark sustainability efforts.

Tourism Ministry spokesperson, Nia Niscaya, said sustainable tourism requires visitors respecting local communities. She explained tourism benefits should support culture, nature, and long-term destination preservation efforts.

"We want to have the visitors that respect to the local culture, to the nature, and they can stay longer, and of course, at the end they will spend more," she said in an interview with RRI Voice of Indonesia on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

The ministry encourages international tourists respecting Indonesian culture and protecting natural attractions responsibly. Visitors are expected supporting local businesses while enjoying geopark experiences across Indonesian destinations.

The spokesperson explained modern tourists increasingly seek immersive experiences rather than ordinary sightseeing activities during holidays. She said visitors now prefer sharing experiences through photographs, media postings, and cultural interactions.

Moreover, the ministry also acknowledged continuing challenges involving waste management around tourism destinations and geoparks. Authorities continue educating visitors about proper rubbish disposal through signs and community communication programs.

Local governments and communities conduct regular cleaning activities to maintain environmental conditions around Ijen. Coordination between tourism authorities and other sectors is considered essential for maintaining sustainability.

Niscaya affirmed Indonesia's tourism uniqueness comes from its culture and welcoming people rather than scenery alone. "What makes Indonesia different is the culture and the people. That's what we call Wonderful Indonesia," she concluded.
