  • Indonesia's financial authority (OJK) is using new digital technology to help small businesses, farmers, and fishermen in Eastern Indonesia get easier access to money and loans.
  • Local leaders and financial experts are joining forces to ensure these new digital systems create real jobs, improve daily life, and boost the regional economy.

RRI.CO.ID, Makassar – The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has begun developing a financial digitization program to expand access to financing for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Eastern Indonesia. This strategic step is being taken to improve financial literacy while strengthening the region’s economic competitiveness in the global market.

Through innovative schemes such as the tokenization of Real World Assets (RWA), financial technology is no longer merely a concept, but has entered the market implementation phase. The application of this technology targets the region’s key commodity sectors, involving farmers, fishermen, and exporters.

To discuss the direction of this policy, the OJK held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) titled “Developing the Potential of MSMEs in Eastern Indonesia through Financial Digitalization Programs” in Makassar. The event was attended by various cross-sectoral stakeholders, ranging from local governments and financial authorities to business operators.

Chief Executive of the OJK’s Supervisory Division for Financial Sector Technology Innovation, Digital Financial Assets, and Crypto Assets (IAKD), Adi Budiarso, outlined the main focus of enlarging the digital financial market. He emphasized that the development of digital systems must focus on tangible benefits for the public.

“The expansion of the digital financial market should not be viewed merely as a technology project, but must be part of regional and national economic development. The goal is not simply how much innovation is generated, but rather the extent of its benefits in expanding access to financing, enhancing financial inclusion, strengthening the efficiency of financial sector intermediation, and promoting public welfare,” Adi conveyed.

The OJK’s efforts to drive digital transformation in western and eastern Indonesia have received a positive response from local governments. The Deputy Governor of South Sulawesi, Fatmawati Rusdi, welcomed the initiative as a crucial opportunity to accelerate the region’s economic growth.

“This forum is not merely a discussion, but an opportunity to unify our vision, strengthen synergy, and take concrete steps so that financial digitalization becomes a new driver of economic growth in Eastern Indonesia,” she said.
