RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - Indonesia's Special Region of Yogyakarta is relocating its regional parliament to preserve the historic Malioboro area. The update was announced in Yogyakarta on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

Construction of the new Regional House of Representatives building has reached 81.7 percent completion. The project is expected to finish by the end of 2026.

Regional Parliament Secretary, Yudi Ismono, said construction remains on schedule under the existing contract. The new building will become operational after relocation activities conclude in early 2027.

He said the relocation supports heritage preservation and protects Yogyakarta's Philosophical Axis. The move also aims to reduce disruptions affecting businesses around Malioboro.

"The old Regional Parliament building is part of a cultural heritage area and is integrated with the northern Teras Malioboro. The site will later become a single complex, possibly as a museum or gallery," he said.

Yudi explained that demonstrations near the current parliament building often affect commercial activities in Malioboro. The new location provides a larger public space for community gatherings and public aspirations.

The new parliament building combines modern architecture with traditional Yogyakarta and colonial design elements. The project has also received oversight from several Indonesian government institutions.

Yudi said the relocation reflects Indonesia's commitment to balancing urban development with cultural heritage preservation. The government also expects the plan to support tourism and local economic activities.
