RRI.CO.ID, Bengkulu - Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadli Zon, visited the historic exile house of Sukarno in Bengkulu, Wednesday, 25 February 2026. The visit reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the role of heritage sites as centers of education, reflection, and cultural activation.

During the visit, Fadli Zon highlighted that Sukarno was exiled by the Dutch colonial authorities to Bengkulu from 1938 to 1942, following his earlier exile in Ende between 1934 and 1938. He noted that these periods of exile were pivotal chapters in the broader struggle for Indonesia’s independence.

“Our founding fathers experienced exile in various regions. Bung Karno in Ende and Bengkulu, Bung Hatta from Digul to Banda Naira, and Bung Syahrir from Digul to Banda Naira before being moved to Sukabumi. These places stand as living witnesses to their struggle for Indonesia’s independence,” the minister said.

In Bengkulu, Sukarno not only endured exile but also engaged in reflection, intellectual discussions, and interactions with local religious leaders, community figures, and cultural actors. Manuscripts such as the Monte Carlo play and various books preserved at the site testify to his vibrant intellectual activity during that period.

Designated as a National Cultural Heritage site, the exile house holds significant potential to be developed as an information center, educational space, and cultural tourism destination. Bengkulu also bears historical importance as the city where Sukarno met Fatmawati, who later sewed Indonesia’s sacred Red-and-White flag.

“We hope more young people will come and learn from this place. The site has been well maintained, and moving forward it should be continuously activated through cultural programs,” Fadli Zon stated. He emphasized the importance of making heritage sites relevant to younger generations.

The minister proposed organizing art performances, poetry readings, musical events, cultural discussions, and developing a reading corner or mini library to enhance public engagement. Supporting facilities, including local Bengkulu coffee and traditional cuisine, were also suggested to attract visitors, particularly youth and tourists from outside the region.

Through the revitalization of the Sukarno Exile House, the Ministry of Culture aims to transform the site from a ceremonial landmark into a dynamic space of learning and inspiration. The initiative reflects Indonesia’s broader strategy to preserve historical memory while fostering cultural awareness among future generations.
