RRI.CO.ID, Situbondo – Construction of the Trans-Java Toll Road continues to progress, with the Probolinggo–Situbondo–Banyuwangi (Prosiwangi) Toll Road being developed in phases. The latest section, connecting Gending in Probolinggo Regency and Besuki in Situbondo Regency for 49.7 kilometers, is nearing completion and almost ready for operation, as observed by Indonesia's Vice President, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, during a visit on Friday, July 10, 2026.

Gibran visited the toll road to review the accelerated completion of the strategic infrastructure project, which is expected to strengthen connectivity across East Java while improving logistics and public mobility in the province's eastern part. Once fully completed, the Prosiwangi Toll Road will become a key link in Java's strategic transport network, completing the island's toll road corridor from its western to eastern tip and becoming a main gateway to Bali.

Unlike the other sections of the toll road, the Gending–Besuki section traverses mountain foothills and runs along the coastline. Motorists can also see the smokestacks of the Paiton Coal-Fired Power Plant, one of Indonesia's largest power stations, which supplies electricity to Java, Madura, and Bali.

President Director of state-owned toll road operator Jasa Marga, Rivan Purwantono, said the Gending–Besuki section reached 100 percent construction completion in April. He explained that the operator, together with relevant ministries and agencies, is currently completing the functional and operational feasibility assessment to ensure the road meets all required standards before commercial operations begin.

"The vice president appreciated the project, which has reached 100 percent completion, and hopes it will soon receive operational clearance so it can be put into service," he said after accompanying Gibran, as quoted from the Indonesian Vice Presidential Secretariat on Friday.

Rivan also said Gibran emphasized the importance of accelerating transport connectivity to Banyuwangi through several possible routes. According to him, the vice president suggested speeding up construction and exploring alternative alignments to Banyuwangi, the easternmost regency in Java.

"He also mentioned routes through Bondowoso and Jember (regencies), which are considered more favorable, as Jember is the economic hub of this part of East Java," Rivan said.

The Gending–Besuki section is expected to begin full operations in late 2026, ahead of the Christmas and New Year holiday. Although commercial operations have not yet commenced, the section was temporarily opened free of charge from March 14 to April to help ease traffic during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming and return travel period.

The Vice Presidential the toll road cut travel time between Probolinggo and Besuki during the Eid holiday from around two hours via the Pantura national highway to approximately one hour and 15 minutes. Once the entire Prosiwangi Toll Road is completed, travel time between Probolinggo and Banyuwangi is expected to fall from around five hours to just about three hours.
