RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Culture has launched the 2026 Indonesian Heroic Narrative Film Production Program to encourage the creation of films based on the nation's struggle for independence. Unveiled at Senayan Golf Club in South Jakarta on Thursday, 9 July 2026, the initiative aims to strengthen historical literacy and preserve Indonesia's collective memory, particularly among younger generations.
The program carries the theme "Weaving Memory, Nurturing the Nation: Reviving the History of 1945–1950 through Contemporary Cinema". Through a nationwide film competition, the government invites production companies, film communities, and Indonesian filmmakers to develop cinematic works inspired by the country's fight to defend its independence.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon said film is a powerful cultural medium for bringing history to life while instilling the values of patriotism, sacrifice, and national identity. He emphasized that the government is committed to supporting more historical films so that Indonesia's stories of heroism can reach wider audiences across generations.
"Film is a cultural product that provides an excellent platform for historical education while promoting the values of struggle, sacrifice, and nationhood," Fadli said. He noted that the 1945–1950 period was shaped not only by armed resistance but also by diplomatic efforts, economic resilience, journalism, arts, and cultural movements, many of which remain largely unexplored in Indonesian cinema.
Fadli added that the program is designed to reintroduce these historical events through modern storytelling while maintaining historical accuracy. Participating filmmakers will therefore work closely with historians to ensure that creative interpretation is supported by credible historical research.
"We want to bring the past into the present so that it remains relevant. Creative freedom is encouraged, but historical context must be preserved through collaboration with historians," he said.
Director of Film, Music, and Media at the Ministry of Culture, Irini Dewi Wanti, explained that the program is designed as a collaborative platform bringing together filmmakers, historians, academics, archivists, screenwriters, producers, directors, and other film professionals. Submitted proposals will undergo administrative screening, jury evaluation, project pitching, script development, and production mentoring through a transparent and professional selection process.
The competition is open in two categories: Feature Film, with a minimum running time of 75 minutes, and Short Film, with a duration of 15 to 30 minutes. Registration will run from 10 July to 10 August 2026, through the official website filmkepahlawanan.id, with the government hoping the program will produce high-quality films that preserve Indonesia's historical legacy while strengthening the country's film industry at both the national and international levels.
