RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - A member of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR RI), Rieke Diah Pitaloka, stated that Indonesia should promote de-escalation, peaceful conflict resolution, respect for national sovereignty, freedom of navigation, and adherence to international humanitarian law during the Democracy Dialectics discussion titled Hormuz, Iran–U.S., and Indonesia's Energy Sovereignty Emergency.

She emphasized that the issue involves legal and human rights concerns, armed conflict, disruptions to maritime transportation, and threats to civilian infrastructure, all of which are closely related to the rights to life, security, the safety of ship crews, migrant workers, refugees, and the state's obligation to protect Indonesian citizens overseas.

Rieke, a member of the House Commission XIII, delivered these remarks during the Democracy Dialectics discussion, organized by the Parliamentary Journalists Coordinator (KWP) in collaboration with the Parliamentary News Bureau. The event was held at Nusantara Building, DPR RI Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, June 25, 2026, as reported by dpr.go.id.

In response to the situation, Rieke formally presented four recommendations. First, she urged the government to strengthen diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions between Iran and the United States while safeguarding freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Second, she called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to update its early warning system, improve the registration of Indonesian citizens abroad, provide legal assistance, and prepare evacuation measures for Indonesians in conflict-affected areas.

"Third, the government should strengthen national energy reserves, diversify crude oil and LPG imports, and mitigate fiscal risks," Rieke conveyed.

Fourth, she urged the President to issue a Government Regulation establishing a National Bioethanol Ecosystem to ensure certainty across the entire supply chain, including raw materials, pricing, off takers, distribution, quality standards, and incentives.

"Bioethanol should become an instrument of Indonesia's energy sovereignty, reduce dependence on imported fuel, strengthen farmers and domestic industries, and protect the economic rights of the people," she proposed.

Rieke further stressed that developments in the Strait of Hormuz should serve as a wake-up call for Indonesia to reinforce its national energy sovereignty. According to her, the conflict in the region affects not only energy security and economic stability but also human rights and the safety of Indonesian citizens abroad.
