RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - From January to June 22, 2026, state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) recorded 134 accidents at level crossings. Of these, 118 incidents -- about 88 percent -- were caused by drivers disregarding crossing barriers.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communications Anne Purba said improving road user discipline is key to preventing accidents at level crossings, particularly during periods of increased public mobility such as school holidays.

“Based on KAI data as of June 22, 2026, there were 134 accidents at level crossings. Of these, 118 incidents were caused by drivers breaking through,” Anne said on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

Other causes included vehicle breakdowns (seven incidents) and late or incomplete barrier closures (six incidents).

Anne urged the public to adopt safe behavior by stopping briefly, looking left and right, listening to their surroundings, obeying signals, and crossing only after ensuring it is safe.

She emphasized that an open barrier does not mean road users can pass without caution. When the barrier begins to close, the siren sounds, or an officer signals a stop, drivers should not force their way through.

“Barriers are a safety aid. The decision to stop, look, and ensure a safe path remains with the road user,” she said.

During the same period, KAI recorded 113 victims of level crossing accidents: 48 fatalities, 29 serious injuries, and 36 minor injuries.

Meanwhile, 134 vehicles were affected, including 77 motorcycles and 57 cars. Of the accidents, 62 occurred at gated crossings and 72 at ungated crossings.

Compared with the same period in 2025, the number of accidents fell by about 3 percent, from 138 to 134. The number of affected vehicles decreased from 144 to 134, while the number of victims dropped from 151 to 113.

Nevertheless, Anne stressed that the 48 deaths serve as a stark reminder for all parties to improve discipline and compliance with safety regulations at level crossings.

To reduce accidents, KAI continues to strengthen safety awareness campaigns in collaboration with local administrations, police, transportation agencies, schools, communities, and the public. (Misni Parjiati)
