RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Communications and Digital Affairs is currently developing what could become one of the world's largest applications of artificial intelligence in social welfare delivery. This ambitious initiative aims to accurately target and distribute essential assistance to an estimated 50 million citizens.

Communications and Digital Affairs Minister, Meutya Hafid, officially revealed the plan during her address at the “DEAL 2026 Digital Ecosystem Alignment” forum in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. She stated that the government has already begun testing these digital technologies through a specialized pilot project in Banyuwangi, East Java.

"Mr. President also plans to, and we’ve already conducted a pilot project in Banyuwangi, implement digital interventions, including AI, in our social assistance programs," she said.

The initiative aims to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and inclusiveness of welfare distribution while expanding financial inclusion among low-income households. According to the minister, the program could eventually cover around 18 million families, equivalent to approximately 50 million Indonesians.

"The beneficiaries number approximately 18 million families, or the equivalent of 50 million Indonesians," she noted.

If the government successfully implements this digital project nationwide, it will mark a historic milestone for global development. Minister Meutya noted that this endeavor could easily become the largest digital financial inclusion effort ever undertaken in the world.

"This will be the first or this will be the biggest financial digital inclusion I think in the world," she said.

The announcement reflects Indonesia's broader ambition to reshape its position within the global tech landscape. Instead of remaining a major consumer of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, the country is shifting toward becoming an impactful innovator.

From the forum, the government planned to establish a strong cross-sector collaboration that drives inclusive, productive, and highly competitive economic growth. The minister mentioned that this joint effort must deliver a balanced and measurable impact that strengthens Indonesian society, supports a sustainable domestic industry, and reinforces the nation on the global stage.
