RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s National Library is being encouraged to expand its role beyond providing information and become a key institution for promoting the nation’s history, culture, and civilizational heritage. Lawmakers say the effort is important to strengthen national identity amid the challenges of globalization.
The proposal was raised during a parliamentary hearing between the House of Representatives’ Commission X and the National Library regarding its 2027 work plan and budget. The discussion took place at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as quoted by dpr.go.id.
Commission X member, Muhammad Hoerudin Amin, said the National Library has a strategic role as the guardian of the nation’s collective memory. He argued that literacy programs should not focus solely on contemporary information but also highlight the historical achievements of the Indonesian archipelago.
He also said the institution should position itself as a center for “civilization literacy” that introduces Indonesians to their own cultural and historical legacy. He stressed the importance of ensuring that information about Indonesia’s past receives the same attention as information from abroad.
The lawmaker expressed concern that many young people are more familiar with imported cultural influences than with their own national heritage. He noted that Indonesia possesses a rich and influential civilization whose historical footprint extends beyond the archipelago, including parts of the Pacific region.
Hoerudin said greater efforts are needed to introduce the achievements of past generations through literacy programs and educational initiatives. He believes a stronger understanding of history can help younger generations develop pride in their cultural roots.
He also emphasized that awareness of national history and civilization is essential for building strong character and social cohesion. In his view, nations that lose touch with their cultural foundations risk losing direction in an increasingly complex world.
The legislator expressed hope that the National Library will continue strengthening its role as a center for learning and the preservation of Indonesia’s intellectual heritage. He added that literacy should serve not only as a means of acquiring knowledge but also as a tool for reinforcing national unity and sustaining the country’s civilization.
