RRI.CO.ID, Nort Sulawesi - A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Indonesia's Sangihe Islands in North Sulawesi on Monday morning, June 8, 2026. The powerful tremor triggered minor tsunami waves that were detected along several coastal areas in eastern Indonesia.
The Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the first tsunami wave was recorded in Loloda, West Halmahera, at 7:20 a.m. local time. Additional waves were observed in Ulusiau, Sitaro Islands, and Melonguane in the Talaud Islands, with the highest reaching 0.19 meters.
Although the tsunami waves were relatively small, authorities raised alert levels and urged coastal communities to remain vigilant. BNPB advised residents in affected areas to closely follow official updates and emergency instructions.
Seismic activity remained intense following the main earthquake, with a series of strong aftershocks continuing to occur. Several aftershocks measuring above magnitude 5.0 were recorded within hours of the initial quake.
According to the Agency, the strongest aftershock reached magnitude 6.0 at 7:55 a.m. local time northwest of Tahuna in the Sangihe Islands. Additional aftershocks measuring magnitudes 5.9, 5.7, and 5.2 were also detected by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG.
Reports from local disaster management agencies indicated that the earthquake was felt across several areas of North Sulawesi. Residents in the Sangihe Islands experienced strong shaking lasting three to four seconds, causing temporary panic among local communities.
The tremors were also felt in North Minahasa, Manado, and the Talaud Islands with varying levels of intensity. As of the latest reports, local authorities were continuing to assess potential damage and monitor conditions in affected areas.
BNPB has urged residents in coastal regions of North Sulawesi, North Maluku, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, and East Kalimantan to remain alert. People have been advised to stay away from shorelines, avoid damaged structures, and follow guidance issued by emergency officials as the situation continues to develop.
