BMKG Ends Tsunami Warning Following M7.6 Earthquake in North Maluku

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) ended the tsunami early warning following the earthquake in the area of Batang Dua Island, Ternate, North Maluku on Thursday, 2 April 2026. This earthquake is located at coordinates 1.25° N; 126.27° E, or precisely situated in the sea at a distance of 129 km southeast of Bitung, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 33 km.

The head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, explained that based on the location of the epicenter and its depth, this earthquake is shallow due to the subduction activity of the Maluku Sea. The analysis results show that the source mechanism indicates the earthquake has an upward movement mechanism (thrust fault).

"According to BMKG monitoring results, there has been a rise in sea surface height in several areas, including West Halmahera at 06:08 WIB with a height of 0.30 m, and Bitung at 06:15 WIB with a height of 0.20 m," Faisal stated.

Then, in Sidangoli at 06:16 WIB with a height of 0.35 m, North Minahasa at 06:18 WIB with a height of 0.75 m, Belang at 06:36 WIB with a height of 0.68 m, and Bumbulan at 06:50 WIB with a height of 0.13 m.

Meanwhile, the Deputy for Geophysics at BMKG, Nelly Florida R., explained that this earthquake affected at least three provinces, starting from North Maluku, North Sulawesi, and Gorontalo.

The residents of Manado also felt the tremors with an intensity of IV-V MMI (The tremors were felt by almost all residents, many people were awakened). The tremors in Gorontalo Bone Bolango, North Gorontalo were felt strongly inside the house, as if a truck was passing by with an intensity of III MMI (The tremors were felt strongly inside the house. The tremors felt as if a truck was passing by).

"Until 09:50 WIB, BMKG monitoring results showed 48 aftershock activities with the largest magnitude of M5.5," Nelly conveyed.

Based on the information received, this incident caused building damage at several points, such as in the KONI Sario Manado building, Kalvari Church on Batang Dua Island in Ternate City, which was caused by the earthquake.

"BMKG stated that the Tsunami Early Warning was declared over at 09:56 WIB. BMKG thanks the local government for assisting in dissemination and taking evacuation steps promptly," Faisal said.
