RRI.CO.ID, Singkawang - The Indonesian government is targeting the completion of the People's School project in Singkawang, West Kalimantan, by June 20, 2026. The initiative is part of a broader effort to expand access to quality education in the country's border regions.

The People's School program is designed to improve educational equity and provide better learning opportunities for underserved communities. The new facility is expected to contribute to human capital development in an area where access to education remains a key challenge.

Special Staff of the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Herzaky Mahendra Putra, said construction progress has reached 58 percent. The government remains optimistic that the project will be completed on schedule.

“Based on our latest inspection, construction progress has reached 58 percent. With work advancing at an average rate of more than 2.5 percent per day, we are optimistic that the June 20 completion target can be achieved,” Herzaky said after visiting the project site in Singkawang on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

To accelerate the construction process, the number of workers involved in the project has been significantly increased. Approximately 1,300 workers are currently employed at the site, up from around 900 previously.

Despite the push to speed up construction, the government emphasized that quality standards and worker safety must not be compromised. Officials stressed that both construction quality and occupational health and safety remain top priorities throughout the project.

“We want to accelerate the work, but building quality and worker safety must remain our primary concerns,” Herzaky said. He also praised the workforce for helping keep the project on track and maintaining steady progress.

The Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development, together with the Ministry of Public Works, will continue monitoring the project until its completion. Once operational, the People's School in West Kalimantan is expected to help expand educational access, promote greater equity in public services, and strengthen human resource development in Indonesia’s border areas.
