RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government continues to promote sustainable coastal development through marine and coastal spatial planning that places local fishermen at the center of development efforts. One such initiative is the development of a Waterfront City area in Marunda, North Jakarta.
According to a press statement from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) on June 1, 2026, the Marunda development project is intended to support the government's priority target of achieving 8 percent economic growth.
Director of Coastal and Small Islands Spatial Utilization at the ministry, Permana Yudiarso, emphasized that coastal development must position fishermen as key stakeholders to ensure that development benefits are directly felt by local communities while strengthening the area's social and ecological sustainability.
“Marine and coastal spaces need to be managed in a fair, sustainable, and adaptive manner to protect coastal ecosystems while ensuring access, safety, and welfare for fishermen across generations,” Permana said.
According to the ministry, the Marunda development plan is aligned with Indonesia’s 2025–2045 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), which aims to promote sustainable economic growth in coastal areas and increase their contribution to regional and national economies.
Furthermore, Director of Coastal Spatial Utilization Control, Fajar Kurniawan, said sustainable coastal development requires collaboration among various stakeholders, including government institutions, businesses, and local communities. He stressed that the ministry would ensure marine space utilization remains inclusive, optimizing coastal resources while addressing challenges faced by coastal communities.
The development program will be implemented in three phases over a seven-year period, covering infrastructure support, economic and capacity-building initiatives, and sustainable business partnerships. The ministry has begun socializing the Marunda Development and Capacity Enhancement Plan to coastal communities in collaboration with local governments and other stakeholders.
Through this approach, the government hopes that coastal development will not only drive economic growth but also improve the welfare of fishing communities and preserve marine ecosystems as part of Indonesia’s blue economy strategy.
