RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reported that inflation during the Eid al-Adha holiday is typically driven by food prices and volatile commodities, with bird’s-eye chili and red chili peppers as the main contributors.
BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Pudji Ismartini said that historically, Eid al-Adha has almost always been followed by inflation. The only exception was in 2024, when deflation occurred.
“Looking at the data series from 2022 to 2025, it is clear that inflation generally occurs during Eid al-Adha, except in 2024 when deflation was recorded,” Pudji said during the 2026 Inflation Control Coordination Meeting in Jakarta on Monday, May 25.
She explained that the inflation rate during Eid al-Adha is usually lower than that during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, as reflected in national inflation data over the past four years.
The food, beverages, and tobacco group, along with volatile price components, consistently account for the largest share of Eid al-Adha inflation, except in 2024 when deflation was recorded.
Pudji emphasized that volatile food commodities, particularly bird’s-eye chili and red chili, are the most frequent drivers of inflation during the holiday.
Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Tomsi Tohir, stressed that inflation control must also maintain price stability. He cautioned that prices should not be pushed so low that they harm farmers and livestock producers.
“Our responsibility in inflation coordination meetings is not only to lower prices as much as possible, but also to ensure they do not fall to levels that cause farmers or livestock producers to suffer losses,” Tomsi said. “We must keep prices fair so that consumers do not pay excessively, while producers can still sell without incurring losses.” (Gusti Panji)
