RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is accelerating the development of its national chip industry, with the government emphasizing talent development and global collaboration as key to entering the global semiconductor supply chain.

This initiative is being implemented through a semiconductor training program organized by the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (Danantara Indonesia), in partnership with British technology company Arm Ltd. The program aims to enhance human resource skills in the electronics and digital economy sectors.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, said the semiconductor industry is crucial because chip technology underpins strategic sectors such as automotive, electronics, data centers, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

“We have just launched the Danantara Indonesia training program with Arm as a step to accelerate the semiconductor and electronics industries integrated into the global ecosystem,” Minister Airlangga said after opening the Semiconductor Training with Arm for Indonesian Talent in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

The training program, held from May 20–22, was organized in collaboration with Danantara Indonesia, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, and Arm Ltd. It was attended by 1,000 participants selected from about 4,500 applicants via digital channels.

Minister Airlangga noted that the global semiconductor industry is projected to reach USD 1.5 trillion, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure growth. Indonesia, he said, has strong potential supported by its population of 285 million, rapid digital economic growth, and strategic mineral reserves.

He explained that Indonesia is beginning to enter the chip industry chain by strengthening human resources and activities in assembly, testing, and packaging. The government aims to train 15,000 semiconductor engineers over the next three years to build a stronger national industrial ecosystem.

Minister Airlangga also highlighted the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), which is expected to be signed this year. He said DEFA could raise Indonesia’s digital economy potential to USD 600 billion, up from the current projection of USD 400 billion by 2030.

“DEFA will strengthen regional digital integration, covering digital trade, cross-border connectivity, data governance, and the technology and innovation ecosystem in Southeast Asia,” he said.

The semiconductor training program is part of broader efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s digital economy and industrial base. Minister Airlangga emphasized that chip technology is a backbone of the digital economy, and collaboration with global partners such as Arm will accelerate Indonesia’s integration into the global semiconductor ecosystem. ***
