RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has announced that 1 Dzulhijjah 1447 Hijri will fall on Monday, May 18, 2026, with Eid al-Adha to be celebrated on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

The decision was made during an isbat (confirmation) session held by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, based on the results of hisab (astronomical calculation) and rukyatul hilal (crescent moon sighting) across Indonesia.

“Based on the calculation and crescent sighting reports, it has been agreed that 1 Dzulhijjah 1447 Hijri falls on Monday, May 18, 2026. Therefore, Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 27, 2026,” said Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar in Jakarta on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

The crescent sighting session took place at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Jakarta, attended by government officials, Islamic organizations, academics, and astronomy experts.

Minister Nasaruddin explained that the crescent moon was observed above the horizon across Indonesia, with an elongation angle that met the criteria set by the Ministers of Religious Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS). These conditions formed the basis for determining the start of the Dzulhijjah month.

The ministry conducted crescent moon observations at 88 locations nationwide to support the isbat session. Reports confirmed that the crescent was visible in Lamongan Regency, East Java, and the testimony was validated by oath at the Lamongan Religious Court. This confirmation became one of the bases for the government’s decision.

According to the minister, the isbat session serves as a joint forum to objectively combine the results of hisab and rukyatul hilal. This approach ensures that the government’s decision is accepted by all Indonesian Muslims. (Misni Parjiati)
