RRI.CO.ID, Bandung – The Indonesian Ministry of Law has officially established Intellectual Property (IP) Centers at universities to accelerate the commercialization of economically valuable research. The establishment of the IP Centers was marked by the simultaneous signing of cooperation agreements on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, in Bandung, West Java.
The Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas, stated that the ministry has officially launched 1,266 IP Centers. “This cooperation involves universities across Indonesia to strengthen the protection and commercialization of national higher education IP,” said Minister Supratman during his opening remarks at the ‘What’s Up Campus Call Out’ event at the Ganesha Cultural Center, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), on Tuesday, May 12.
Minister Supratman said that the government is focusing on both protecting IP and promoting the commercialization of innovations arising from university research. This initiative aims to ensure that campus research generates tangible economic benefits for the community and the national industry.
“We want to ensure the sustainability of research, from idea to product, and ultimately into an economic driver. We are ready to act as marketers, or at least as government procurement agents,” Minister Supratman explained.
According to him, the IP Center will serve as a support hub for students, faculty, and researchers in managing IP. The government also claims to have utilized an application developed by ITB students as a SuperApp for public services.
“West Java is the province with the most IP Centers established through 192 partnerships. East Java recorded 187 partnerships, followed by Jakarta with 114 partnerships and Yogyakarta with 99 partnerships,” Minister Supratman concluded.
Director General of Intellectual Property (Dirjen KI), Hermansyah Siregar, believes that IP Centers are crucial for enhancing academics’ understanding of IP protection and accelerating the commercialization of university innovations.
“The IP Center provides legal certainty for inventors and creators. It is expected to facilitate the commercialization of innovations so that university research outcomes can develop into products, services, or technologies that add value to the national economy,” said Hermansyah. (Gusti Panji)
