RRI.CO.ID, New York - Indonesia called for stronger international cooperation on forest protection during the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests held in New York on Monday May 11, 2026. The meeting took place at United Nations headquarters as global political tensions continue to challenge multilateral action on climate and biodiversity.
Indonesia's Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, said geopolitical complexity must not weaken efforts to confront the climate crisis. He urged forestry leaders and governments to remain focused on safeguarding the world’s forests.
“Protecting the world’s forests amid today’s complex geopolitical landscape requires a renewed spirit of multilateralism,” Raja Juli told delegates. “We need stronger solidarity and concrete collective action to ensure forests remain sustainable for future generations.”
He said worsening environmental pressures demand a more united global response rather than fragmented approaches. According to him, forests should be viewed beyond administrative and political boundaries.
The minister stressed that stronger international partnerships are essential to mobilize greater support and investment for sustainable forest management worldwide. He added that cooperation among governments, institutions, and communities is key to preserving global ecosystems.
Indonesia also reminded UN member states that environmental protection must remain a shared priority despite political differences. The country said safeguarding biodiversity and natural resources is critical for a greener and more inclusive future.
The speech highlighted Indonesia’s effort to position itself as an active voice in global climate and forestry diplomacy. As one of the countries with the world’s largest tropical forests, Indonesia plays a significant role in global conservation efforts.
Joining the minister at the UN session were Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, the Director General of Sustainable Forest Management, and the Director General of Watershed Management and Forest Rehabilitation as part of the Indonesian delegation.
