RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture is strengthening cooperation with the national film industry to boost the country’s presence at the Cannes Film Festival in 2026. The initiative was discussed during a meeting between Culture Minister, Fadli Zon, and production house Bintang Cahaya Sinema in Jakarta on May 4, 2026.
The talks focused on support for Indonesian films entering international markets, development of regional film ecosystems, and sustainable financing partnerships. Officials said stronger collaboration is needed to improve the global competitiveness of Indonesian cinema.
Bintang Cahaya Sinema CEO and founder, Rizka Shakira, said the company plans to bring 15 film projects to the Marche du Film at Cannes 2026. Three projects are currently in production: Petarung, Di Sini Bukan Rumahku, and Paraji: Keris Brojol.
Rizka said participation in Cannes would be a strategic step to promote Indonesian films and build networks with international filmmakers. “We hope for support and collaboration from the Ministry of Culture, because joining this festival offers major benefits, especially promotion and global connections,” she conveyed.
The company also presented plans to organize a film festival in Kuningan, West Java, aimed at encouraging regional filmmaking and developing local talent. The proposal includes opportunities for actors, directors, and creative workers outside major cities.
Actor Ence Bagus, who attended the meeting, said limited cinema access in regional areas should not hinder local film growth. “We want to present an outdoor film festival while continuing to encourage film production in Kuningan,” he said.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting Indonesian cinema through measurable and sustainable collaboration schemes. “We support the development of Indonesian film through various partnership mechanisms that can be utilized optimally,” he said.
He added that the ministry is also prepared to support screenings, networking, and knowledge-based programs to strengthen cultural content. The government hopes broader cooperation with filmmakers will help Indonesia gain stronger recognition at major global festivals such as Cannes.
