Authorities Probe East Bekasi Train Collision, Aid Victims

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has urged the public to await the results of the National Transportation Safety Committee’s (KNKT) investigation into the cause of the train collision in East Bekasi, West Java.
“Let us respect the process and wait for the investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident,” Dudy said in Jakarta on Monday, May 4, 2026.
He called on the public and all stakeholders to wait for KNKT’s comprehensive findings, which will include the causes of the incident and safety recommendations. KNKT is currently investigating the collision between a Commuter Line train and the Argo Bromo Anggrek intercity train at East Bekasi Station on Monday, April 27, 2026.
“The KNKT investigation is being carried out thoroughly and objectively, by gathering facts and information on the ground, considering various factors, and conducting a comprehensive analysis,” he said.

As part of the probe, KNKT has conducted a simulation of the railway signaling system to examine possible technical causes, particularly the signaling system's function and response during the incident. Other investigative processes are still ongoing.
“The Transportation Ministry is committed to following up on the investigation results to improve railway operational safety,” Minister Dudy added.
Meanwhile, state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) President Director Bobby Rasyidin said the company is focusing on operational recovery, assisting passengers and affected families, and strengthening safety measures following the incident.
“Our priority is to ensure recovery runs smoothly, provide support to passengers and families, and safeguard future railway operations. We will remain present throughout the process,” Bobby said.
KAI has also provided trauma-healing services for passengers in need, available through the information post or by calling the call center at 0812-9660-5747.
Initial assistance can be provided via telemedicine, while direct support is available to families who need it. The East Bekasi post will remain open until May 11, 2026, offering information, administrative services, and ongoing assistance.
The Transportation Ministry has expressed full support for KNKT’s investigation and simulations to determine the cause of the collision between the Commuter Line and the long-distance train at East Bekasi Station on April 27.
“The simulation results are crucial in identifying the factors behind the accident and potential weaknesses in the system,” Minister Dudy said at a press conference at East Bekasi Station, which was also streamed online from Jakarta on Wednesday.
He stressed that KNKT’s investigation is comprehensive, objective, and based on field data. “We reiterate that safety remains our top priority,” he said.
KAI reported that operational recovery has begun, with the downstream track reopened early Tuesday, April 28, and the upstream track cleared of debris by early Wednesday, April 29.
On Wednesday afternoon, Minister Dudy boarded a Commuter Line train from East Bekasi to Cikarang to test the reopening of the previously affected route.
The collision between the Commuter Line and the Argo Bromo Anggrek train at East Bekasi Station on April 27 left 107 victims, including 16 fatalities and 91 injured as of Wednesday, April 29. Of those injured, 43 passengers have been discharged from the hospital, while the rest remain under treatment. ***
