RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The government will accelerate the encforcement of crossings nationwide following a collision involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and a commuter line in Bekasi Timur. The move follows the instruction from Prabowo Subianto to improve railway safety.

Indonesia's Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, said the government will prioritize high-risk crossings for immediate action. “We will immediately start by setting priority scales,” he said in a press statement on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

The Ministry of Transportation Indonesia will coordinate with state-run railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and regional authorities to verify field data and assess crossing conditions. The process includes identifying road authority status, security personnel presence, and other safety-related factors.

According to data from the Directorate General of Railways as of April 30, 2026, Indonesia has 4,046 level crossings on active railway lines. Among them, 1,903 crossings are without any security personnel.

Meanwhile, enforcement will include closing illegal crossings, constructing overpasses or underpasses, installing crossing gates, and deploying personnel and equipment. The government has identified 10 short-term priority locations and 50 medium-term priority locations based on risk factors.

Priority criteria include repeated accidents or near misses, high traffic volume, frequent train operations, and hazardous road conditions such as sharp turns or limited visibility. Unguarded registered crossings with minimal safety infrastructure are also included.

The minister also urged the public not to create unauthorized crossings or reopen closed ones. “Illegal crossings can disturb visibility of the train driver,” Minister Dudy said.

On the other hands, many official crossings have been equipped with safety systems. This includes sensors that detect approaching trains and automatically trigger gate closures.
