RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation is awaiting the results of the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) investigation into the cause of the train accident in East Bekasi on April 27, 2026.

“Regarding the incident in East Bekasi, we are awaiting the results of the KNKT investigation,” said Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi during a House of Representatives Commission V working meeting in Jakarta on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

He stressed that the discussion should not focus solely on the accident itself but also serve as an opportunity to examine railway safety comprehensively. Railway safety, he explained, covers facilities, infrastructure, operations, human resources, governance, procedural discipline, supervision, and spatial planning around railway lines.

The government has emphasized that safety is a top priority but must be cautious in drawing conclusions before the official investigation is complete. It does not want to preempt the KNKT’s findings or speculate by blaming any party, ensuring that all facts, data, recordings, statements, and technical analyses are thoroughly examined.

Dudy said the KNKT’s results will guide corrective measures and ensure that all safety recommendations are implemented diligently. While awaiting the investigation, the government has taken steps since the incident, including providing care to victims, restoring services, conducting initial technical inspections, and securing the site.

The Ministry of Transportation continues to coordinate with state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI), KAI Commuter, the National Police (Polri), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), local administrations, and other stakeholders to ensure optimal handling.

He added that railway safety must be strengthened continuously through evaluations of operations, infrastructure, facilities, signaling systems, emergency procedures, human resource competency, and risk management.

These evaluations also include monitoring level crossings and enhancing coordination with parties outside the railway sector to improve safety standards.

“Every input from the House of Representatives (DPR RI) is part of our efforts to improve the system, strengthen oversight, and ensure that public transportation services are safer, more reliable, and trusted by the public,” Minister Dudy said.

On that occasion, he also expressed condolences and deep empathy for the victims and families affected by the accident. The government hopes that those still receiving treatment will recover quickly.

The Ministry of Transportation expressed appreciation to all parties involved in the emergency response, including Basarnas, the police, medical personnel, and others who assisted with evacuating victims. (Misni Parjiati)
