RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni believes the latest carbon trading regulations will open new economic opportunities for communities, particularly those living near forests.
He said the launch of Ministerial Regulation No. 6/2026 is aimed not only at reducing emissions but also at improving community welfare. The carbon trading scheme, strengthened through a derivative of Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025, is designed to be inclusive and involve diverse community groups.
“Through this mechanism, forest farmers in Forest Farmer Groups (KTH), social forestry communities, and indigenous communities can participate. Eventually, they will also gain economic benefits,” Raja Juli said at the Forestry Ministry office in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
Carbon trading in Indonesia has yet to run optimally, but the government is optimistic that public participation will increase with clearer regulations. In addition to creating opportunities for communities, the new rules provide the private sector with the certainty needed to invest in carbon-based projects, including forest preservation.
The government is also preparing additional regulations to ensure transparent and accountable governance of carbon trading. With an inclusive approach, it hopes to establish carbon trading as a new source of economic growth rooted in forest sustainability.
The President’s Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change, Hasyim Djojohadikusomo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing the carbon market as a tool for reducing emissions.
According to Hasyim, the policy received positive and enthusiastic feedback from the international community during the Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil, last November. He said Indonesia’s swift implementation of the policy demonstrates its strong commitment to tackling climate change.
“Indonesia is among the countries making progress in developing carbon trading. This shows the government’s seriousness in reducing carbon emissions, with the carbon market as a key instrument,” he said.
Hasyim added that technical regulations issued by the Forestry Ministry further underscore the government’s commitment to addressing climate challenges across all elements of the nation. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Martina)
