RRI.CO.ID, NTT - The Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is accelerating the development of the National Salt Industry Center (K-SIGN) in Rote Ndao Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, as a new economic driver for coastal communities while supporting the national salt self-sufficiency target. This acceleration is being achieved through strengthened cross-sectoral coordination.

Director General of Marine Management, Koswara, emphasized that the K-SIGN project is a concrete step by the Indonesia's government to strengthen the independence of the national salt industry. "The development of this area will not only increase production but also open up job and business opportunities for coastal communities, especially in Rote Ndao," Koswara said on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

He added that synergy between ministries and local governments is key to overcoming various challenges in the field, both technical and social. The activities taking place in Kupang are also an important part of ensuring the readiness of land acquisition as the foundation for the development of an integrated salt industry area from upstream to downstream.

Meanwhile, the Governor of East Nusa Tenggara, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, stated that the presence of K-SIGN will be a catalyst for regional economic growth. "This area has great potential to improve community welfare, expand job opportunities, and stimulate supporting economic sectors in the region," Emanuel said.

He also affirmed the importance of close collaboration between the central and regional governments, particularly in completing land acquisition and ensuring community preparedness in affected areas. He stated that planning and coordination must be strengthened to ensure a smooth process.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, previously emphasized that the development of K-SIGN is part of a strategic policy to strengthen the independence of the national salt industry. In addition to reducing dependence on imports, this project is also expected to create jobs, increase incomes in coastal communities, and sustainably drive the regional economy toward national salt self-sufficiency.
