RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is strengthening its green economy strategy by expanding access to forest carbon trading through a new inclusive policy. The regulation aims to involve local communities while enhancing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Ministry of Forestry has issued Regulation No. 6 of 2026 on procedures for carbon trading through a greenhouse gas emission offset scheme in the forestry sector. The policy was announced in Jakarta,Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, said the regulation represents a key step in achieving Indonesia’s national emission reduction targets. He emphasized that the policy aligns with broader commitments to climate action and sustainable development.

“This regulation is an important step in encouraging a green economy while strengthening our emission reduction efforts,” Raja Juli Antoni said. He added that the policy provides a clearer framework for managing carbon trading in the forestry sector.

The minister noted that the regulation follows Presidential Regulation No. 110 of 2025 on carbon economic value. It also introduces a structured roadmap, including emission reduction targets, coverage areas, and implementation strategies.

Head of Public Relations and International Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Forestry, Ristianto Pribadi, highlighted the inclusive aspect of the policy. He said the regulation accommodates the interests of local communities living near forest areas.

“Local communities can now participate in carbon project development with support from individual consultants, making it more accessible and affordable,” Ristianto said. He stressed that this approach allows broader participation beyond large corporations.

The government expects the policy to expand stakeholder involvement and strengthen forest protection efforts. It also aims to enhance Indonesia’s contribution to global climate change mitigation through a more integrated and sustainable system.
