RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, has called for an evaluation of Indonesia’s troop deployment to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) following recent security incidents.
Puan highlighted that attacks have occurred in areas designated as safe zones, raising concerns about the safety of Indonesian peacekeepers. She suggested pausing troop deployments in the next period to prioritize protection.
“The safety of all Indonesian citizens must be the top priority, including those serving as peacekeepers,” she said at the Senayan Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
She urged the government and relevant stakeholders to strengthen logistics and field security systems. In the face of global uncertainty, the DPR has also asked the government to mitigate risks, including potential security and economic impacts.
“Indonesia is not directly involved in the armed conflict. However, we must be prepared to anticipate various future possibilities,” Puan added.
Her remarks followed reports that three Indonesian soldiers serving in UNIFIL were killed in two separate explosions in southern Lebanon, with several others injured.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Commission I of the DPR, Utut Adianto, expressed a different view.
He argued that Indonesian troops should remain in Lebanon, stressing that participation in UN peacekeeping missions is a constitutional mandate. “Don’t withdraw. It’s part of our constitutional mandate. Indonesia is involved in maintaining world peace, including supporting Palestinian independence,” Utut said.
He emphasized that Indonesia’s role is strictly as a peacekeeping force, not as a participant in direct armed conflict. “It is not permissible for us to be involved in direct warfare. UNIFIL is a temporary force established to maintain regional stability,” he explained.
The DPR has requested a comprehensive evaluation to prevent similar incidents in the future, urging the government to improve field guidance and situational awareness for deployed soldiers. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Martina)
