RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture is intensifying efforts to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Kei Islands in Southeast Maluku, highlighting the region’s significance as a maritime cultural hub. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding both tangible and intangible cultural assets across the archipelago.

According to a press release received, Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, emphasized the importance of strengthening cultural advancement in Kei during a meeting with Southeast Maluku Regent Muhammad Thaher Hanubun in Jakarta. He noted that the region holds vast cultural potential that reflects Indonesia’s diverse heritage.

Hanubun described the Kei Islands as a vital node in the maritime civilization of the archipelago, where traditional systems remain actively practiced. “Kei culture represents a living, structured system that continues to guide social relations, customs, leadership, and community life,” he said.

The regent also highlighted ongoing efforts by the local government to preserve and document the Larwul Ngabal customary law. This initiative aims to reinforce local values and sustain traditional governance systems rooted in indigenous wisdom.

Responding to the proposal, Fadli Zon expressed support for nominating Larwul Ngabal as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia. He also praised the people of Southeast Maluku for maintaining customary laws that predate the establishment of Indonesia’s state ideology, Pancasila.

In addition, the minister endorsed plans to hold the Meti Kei Festival in October 2026, which is expected to showcase the region’s cultural richness. The festival is seen as a strategic platform to promote local traditions and boost cultural tourism.

Director General of Cultural Protection and Tradition, Restu Gunawan, stressed the importance of systematic documentation and recognition of cultural assets. “Regional governments need to ensure proper documentation and prepare supporting materials for potential UNESCO nominations,” he said.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to advancing regional cultures through collaborative efforts between central and local governments. Such cooperation is essential to ensure that living cultural practices in the Kei Islands are preserved, documented, and recognized at both national and international levels.
