Indonesia Accelerates Post-Disaster Recovery in Three Provinces on Sumatra

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is accelerating post-disaster recovery efforts in several provinces on Sumatra. The initiative focuses on strengthening coordination between ministries, national agencies, and local governments.
The update was delivered during a joint press conference in Jakarta, Wednesday, March 25, 2026. The event was attended by the Minister of Home Affairs, the head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), and the head of the Presidential Staff Office.
BNPB Chief Lieutenant General Suharyanto conveyed rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra are progressing according to plan. The government is focusing on rebuilding housing, repairing basic infrastructure, and restoring essential public services.
The recovery program also prioritizes the restoration of education, healthcare, and local economic activities. Authorities aim to ensure affected communities can gradually return to normal living conditions.
He said the government will continue distributing logistics aid and operational support to affected areas. Financial assistance for temporary housing and technical support for local governments are also being provided.
During the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase, BNPB and the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas plan to build around 36,000 permanent houses. The housing program is intended for residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the disasters.
Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, urged local governments to ensure reconstruction programs follow the agreed Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Plan. Strong coordination between central and regional authorities is considered essential to accelerate recovery.
On the same occasion, Presidential Staff Office Head Muhammad Qodari said President Prabowo is closely monitoring the recovery process. The government has pledged to ensure that reconstruction is transparent, accountable, and directly benefits affected communities.
