RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works has prepared 189 Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) at highway rest areas to support the 2026 Eid al-Fitr exodus.
Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo said the facilities were set up to assist electric vehicle users during long trips and to promote eco-friendly transportation in Indonesia.
He confirmed that national road infrastructure, including toll roads, is in a safe, passable condition. “Equally crucial is the readiness of supporting facilities such as rest areas, which serve as key points for returnees to rest,” Dody said in a press statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
The SPKLU facilities are distributed across major toll road sections on Java and Sumatra. In Java, 152 units are available at 73 rest areas along the Tangerang–Merak Toll Road in Banten and the Pandaan–Malang Toll Road in East Java. On Sumatra, 37 units are located at 27 rest areas along the Bakauheni Toll Road and the Pekanbaru–Dumai Toll Road.
In addition to EV charging stations, rest areas also provide gas stations, restrooms, prayer rooms, and food courts. The ministry has also prepared 15 additional functional rest areas to ease traffic congestion when needed.
Optimizing rest areas is expected to make the exodus journey smoother and more comfortable. The government is also encouraging wider adoption of electric vehicles.
With adequate infrastructure, EV users now have more options during their journey, boosting public confidence in electric mobility. The initiative is part of efforts to accelerate Indonesia’s transition toward sustainable transportation, with the government continuing to promote the use of eco-friendly energy in the sector.
