RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Human Rights (HAM) has urged the police to expedite the investigation into the acid attack on Andrie Yunus, an activist from the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), to ensure transparent and accountable law enforcement.

Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiyanto emphasized that the government remains committed to guaranteeing the protection of human rights, including freedom of expression and opinion, as stipulated in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which has been ratified through Law No. 12/2005.

"The government's commitment to protecting and respecting human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression, opinion, and peaceful assembly, remains unchanged," Mugiyanto said in a written statement in Jakarta, Sunday, March 15, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

According to him, respecting critical public voices is part of the checks and balances mechanism in democratic life and is the government's official position, as reflected in President Prabowo Subianto's Asta Cita agenda.

Regarding the case of Andrie Yunus, Mugiyanto said that the incident has also attracted the attention of the international community, including United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk and UN Special Rapporteur for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor.

He revealed that this international attention has the potential to impact Indonesia's position as a member and President of the UN Human Rights Council if the case is not handled transparently and expeditiously.

"The police urgently need to accelerate the investigation and disclose clear and comprehensive information about the acid attack on Andrie Yunus," he said.

He continued, saying that the Ministry of Human Rights has communicated with the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to encourage an accelerated investigation to uncover the perpetrators, motives, and possible intellectuals behind the attack.

He expressed belief that a thorough investigation of the case is crucial to prevent speculation that could undermine the credibility of the government's commitment to protecting human rights.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Human Rights appreciates the public's participation in assisting in the identification of the perpetrators through CCTV footage. However, Mugiyanto reminded the public to continue to rely on the results of official investigations by law enforcement officials, especially amidst the development of artificial intelligence technology that can trigger information manipulation.

On the other hand, the government expressed its support for the recovery process of the victim who is currently undergoing medical treatment. "The state will cover the costs of treatment and recovery until complete," said Mugiyanto.

He also expressed sympathy and solidarity with Andrie Yunus and hoped that the victim would recover quickly after receiving optimal medical care. ***
