Indonesia Promotes Historic Indarung I Site as Cultural Space

RRI.CO.ID, Padang - Indonesia’s Minister of Culture Fadli Zon visited the historic Indarung I cement factory complex in Padang, West Sumatra, Thursday, March 13, 2026, during a working visit to the region. The site is considered an important symbol of early industrial development in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
The Indarung I plant, operated by PT Semen Padang, is recognized as the first cement factory in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. The historical archives of the site have alsobeen recognized by UNESCO as part of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific.
The physical structures of the Indarung I complex have been designated as a National Cultural Heritage site by the Indonesian government. The designation highlights the site's importance as a milestone in the country’s industrialization and national development.
During the visit, Fadli Zon highlighted the potential of the historic complex to be developed into a public cultural and educational space. Several locations within the area could be revitalized for artistic and cultural activities.
“This area can be utilized as an amphitheater, exhibition space, and theater performance venue,” Fadli Zon said. “Historic buildings here can be activated as an art space for cultural and artistic expression.”
The minister also noted that several parts of the complex require improvements to support future development. He emphasized that cooperation between the central government, local authorities, communities, and the company managing the area will be important.
According to him, the development of the site could strengthen its role not only as a historical landmark but also as a public learning space. The initiative is expected to enrich the narrative of Indonesia’s industrial history.
“This location already has strong potential and value as a cultural heritage site,” Fadli Zon said. “I believe it can become an additional space for creative and cultural expression.
