RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono has warned that escalating conflict in the Middle East poses a serious threat to Indonesia’s economic stability. He said the region is a global energy hub whose disruptions directly affect oil and gas prices worldwide.

“The world today is in a state of serious uncertainty. When armed conflict occurs in the world’s energy centers, the impact spreads to all countries, including Indonesia. We must be vigilant, responsive, and strategic,” Edhie Baskoro said on Monday, March 2, 2026, as quoted on the official MPR RI website.

Edhie, known as Ibas, highlighted the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which 20–30 percent of global oil trade and LNG distribution pass.

He warned that disruptions in the strait could trigger drastic spikes in energy prices and create a domino effect on the global economy. For Indonesia, he said, this could burden the state budget and risk higher inflation due to rising energy, insurance, and shipping costs.

Ibas stressed that Indonesia must respond with measured strategic policies rather than short-term reactions. He encouraged accelerating the development of new and renewable energy, diversifying import sources, and strengthening national energy reserves to reduce vulnerability to external shocks.

He also urged Indonesia to maintain its independent and active foreign policy by promoting dialogue, ceasefires, and peaceful resolutions through multilateral forums. “We must anticipate the impact of this global economic spillover with measured steps and targeted policies to maintain stable national economic growth,” he said.

Ibas called on all elements of the nation: the government, parliament, business actors, and the public, to strengthen national unity and mutual cooperation.

He said domestic stability is key to facing external shocks. “Amidst global geopolitical turmoil, Indonesia must stand firm as an anchor of stability and a moral voice for world peace,” Ibas concluded. ***
