RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Germany have agreed to strengthen strategic collaboration in the energy sector to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, which have been disrupted by geopolitical turmoil following conflict in the Middle East.

“The conflict in Iran and the resulting fossil fuel supply crisis show that the issue is not only climate change, but also energy security, which is a shared interest,” German Ambassador to Indonesia Ralf Beste said at a press conference at the German Embassy in Jakarta on Friday, June 12, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He noted that both countries share a common interest in building a robust energy system less dependent on external sources. Many nations are accelerating investment in renewable energy to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Beste emphasized that the energy transition is a long process requiring time. Germany, he said, is ready to support Indonesia by sharing experience, transferring technical knowledge, and discussing strategies tailored to Indonesia’s national conditions and needs.

He acknowledged that the energy mix structures in Indonesia and Germany differ significantly. Therefore, cooperation must take into account Indonesia’s energy realities to ensure an effective and sustainable transition.

Germany’s commitment to Indonesia’s clean energy development is evident through its participation in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), launched in 2022.

To date, Germany has allocated around USD 1.5 billion of the USD 20 billion total investment target to support renewable energy projects and accelerate Indonesia’s energy transition.

Beste also stressed that stability in the Middle East is directly linked to global energy stability. Ending the conflict in the Persian Gulf region, he said, is in the mutual interest of Indonesia and Germany, given its impact on global energy supplies and prices.

As the risks of disruption to global energy supplies grow, cooperation between Indonesia and Germany in the energy sector is increasingly important for strengthening national energy security and accelerating the shift to cleaner, more sustainable sources. ***
