RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is preparing to export 2,280 tons of premium rice to Arab Saudi to support the needs of Indonesian pilgrims during the 2026 Hajj season. The plan was discussed during a high-level coordination meeting led by the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs in Jakarta, Monday 23 February 2026.

According to official data, a total of 205,420 Indonesian pilgrims and Hajj officers are expected to travel in 2026. The projected rice requirement is based on an allocation of 100 grams per meal across 111 meals during the pilgrimage period in Makkah, Madinah, and Armuzna.

The rice prepared for export will be premium long-grain rice with a maximum broken rate of five percent, meeting international quality standards. A survey found that 98 percent of catering providers in Saudi Arabia are ready to use Indonesian rice, provided that pricing aligns with contractual agreements.

The first shipment is scheduled to depart on 28 February 2026 to Jeddah, marking the start of logistical operations. Indonesia’s state logistics agency, Perum Bulog, has handled procurement, milling, packaging, and vessel booking to ensure timely delivery.

From a regulatory standpoint, the Badan Karantina Indonesia has overseen export compliance through the issuance of phytosanitary certificates and food safety inspections. Initial assessments indicate that the rice meets all technical, administrative, and halal certification requirements set by Saudi authorities.

Officials stated that the initiative also involves cross-ministerial coordination, including mechanisms related to Indonesia’s Government Rice Reserves and financing arrangements. The program is positioned not only as logistical support for pilgrims but also as part of Indonesia’s broader food diplomacy strategy.

“This program strengthens Indonesia’s role as a supplier of quality food products that meet international standards,” officials said in the press release. The initiative is also expected to enhance service quality for Indonesian pilgrims during their stay in Saudi Arabia.

The government expressed optimism that the 2026 rice export plan will proceed smoothly and deliver added value both for Hajj services and Indonesia’s national food sector. By supplying staple food directly from home, Indonesia aims to ensure quality control while reinforcing its presence in the global halal food market.
