Most Traditional Markets in Sumatra Resume Operations After Disaster

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Most of the traditional market in West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh have resume operations by mid-February 2026. Some 91.75 percent of them were operating again after undergoing post-disaster recovery.
Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso conveyed that during a coordination meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR RI) and disaster rehabilitation task force in Jakarta, Wednesday, 18 February 2026. The meeting discussed progress of restoring trade facilities and supporting local economic recovery efforts regionally.
“Recovery of trade facilities, especially traditional markets, continues showing tangible results nationally,” he said. The minister aemphasized traditional markets remain key drivers for local economic recovery after disasters across affected communities.
As quoted by Trade Ministry's press release, government data recorded 194 traditional markets and more than eighteen thousand traders affected by the disasters. Among them, 95 markets suffered minor damage while others experienced moderate and severe structural damage impacts.
So far 178 traditional markets have resumed operations with remaining recoveries concentrated mostly in Aceh province. Retail sector recovery also progressed with most affected modern stores returning to normal operations gradually.
Data compiled with Indonesian Retail Merchants Association (Aprindo) showed 383 affected retail outlets across disaster impacted regions in Sumatra. Around 96 percent or 368 outlets have already resumed business as usual following recovery measures.
The Ministry of Trade implemented accelerated recovery measures including market assessments and coordinated cleanup actions regionally. The ministry also distributed emergency tents and proposed revitalization funding with national planning institutions and finance authorities.
Staple prices in North Sumatra and West Sumatra remained relatively stable during the ongoing recovery period. “For maintaining distribution and availability of staples we strengthened coordination with ID FOOD and Bulog,” Minister Budi Santoso conveyed.
