RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia, through the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), is preparing to build a new ocean research vessel and optimize two other research vessels to strengthen marine research capacity.
Deputy for Research and Innovation Infrastructure of the research agency, Iman Hidayat, stated in Jakarta on Wednesday, 18 February 2026 that the research fleet holds a strategic position, not only for domestic interests but also for international contributions.
"Managing the research and development vessel fleet is a strategic component for BRIN in carrying out its duties and functions in conducting research and innovation in the fields of maritime affairs, marine resources, and oceanography, both nationally and globally," he said.
In a Market Sounding for Ship Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Project, he explained that this project includes the construction of an ocean-going research vessel designed to support various marine research themes, including geoscience and oceanography. The importance of this project is based on a survey that indicates a high demand for research vessel services in Indonesia.
“The results of the RDS or real demand survey show that the potential need for services is significant in Indonesia with an estimated total need reaching around 2,400 or almost 2,500 screen days per year,” Iman said. He continued by stating that the vessel is also designed to support interdisciplinary research relevant to global agendas such as climate change, marine resource exploration, and oceanographic dynamics
With the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme, Indonesia is opening up opportunities for international investors and partners. This project is backed up by the state-backed Indonesian Infrastructure Guarantee Fund, an enterprise that provides government guarantees for infrastructure PPP projects.
