RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta: The Indonesian government is strengthening the role of the press to protect public reasoning amid an overwhelming flood of digital information. The move reflects Indonesia’s commitment to responsible journalism in the digital era. The message was delivered during National Press Day 2026 celebrations in Serang, Banten on Monday, 9 February 2026.

The government noted that rapid technological progress brings opportunities while amplifying serious information risks. The spread of unverified and low-quality content can weaken public judgment. This condition has triggered a phenomenon widely referred to as brain rot.

Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, Muhaimin Iskandar, said strengthening the national press ecosystem is now essential. He stressed that journalism must guide society through digital noise. The responsibility grows as algorithms increasingly influence public attention.

“The press must serve as a clarifier of information, not an added source of noise. The media ecosystem needs to be encouraged to create an information environment that is educational, inspiring, and empowering.” he said.

Muhaimin added that sustained collaboration between the government and media professionals remains crucial. This cooperation also strengthens democratic resilience and social cohesion.

Indonesia is currently Southeast Asia’s largest digital market with more than 229 million people connected online. Around eighty percent of the population uses the internet daily. On average, Indonesians spend nearly three hours per day on social media platforms.

The press is expected to bridge government policy and public understanding of national priority programs. Coverage includes people’s schools, free nutritious meals, village cooperatives, and long-term strategic initiatives. Accurate reporting positions Indonesia’s development narrative clearly for global audiences.
