RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is positioning culture as a key driver of inclusive and sustainable economic growth, according to its Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon. The statement was delivered during a high-level discussion on culture-based economic development in Jakarta, Thursday, 22 January 2026.

Speaking at the Starting Year Forum 2026, Fadli Zon, said many countries are now leveraging culture as soft power and a modern economic engine. He highlighted the growing global importance of cultural and creative industries.

The Minister noted that Indonesia is home to hundreds of nationally protected heritage sites and thousands of intangible cultural assets. He said improvements in museum management are already generating measurable economic impact.

Indonesia’s National Museum has recorded a surge in visitor numbers, rising by several hundred percent in recent years. This increase has contributed to economic activity through ticket sales, exhibitions, merchandise, and culinary offerings.

Fadli Zon also outlined Indonesia’s cultural framework, which recognizes ten cultural domains under national law. With more than 1,300 ethnic groups and 718 local languages, Indonesia is regarded as one of the world’s oldest and most diverse civilizations.

Referring to recent international recognition of Indonesia’s ancient cave art, the Minister said cultural heritage must be protected, developed, and responsibly utilized. He emphasized that the economic potential of culture remains largely untapped.

Unlike natural resources such as coal, oil, and gas, culture is a renewable asset that will never be depleted. The Minister encouraged stronger collaboration with the private sector and philanthropic institutions to support cultural development.

Beyond its economic value, Fadli Zon stressed that culture serves as a binding force for national identity and social cohesion. He called on all stakeholders to support cultural advancement as part of Indonesia’s long-term development strategy.
