RRI.CO.ID, Aceh Tamiang – Aceh Tamiang Regency is among the areas hardest hit by the flash floods that struck on Wednesday, 26 November 2025. Two villages, Lintang Bawah and Sukajadi, were nearly devastated by the raging torrents of floodwaters. Collapsed buildings, scattered logs, muddy inundation, and only a handful of houses left standing bear witness to the severity of the disaster.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that the rainfall on that day was the highest in Aceh in the past six years. Amid the devastation, one thing remained unwashed away: human resilience.

The steadfast spirit of Aceh Tamiang residents became a vital source of strength, enabling survivors to support one another, while compassion also flowed in from communities across Indonesia.

Mansha, a resident of Lintang Bawah Village, chose to stay at the site despite extremely limited conditions. For six days, he survived without food, relying solely on murky river water that he first allowed to settle. His determination to survive was his only anchor amid the mud and floodwaters that had yet to fully recede.

“Evacuees kept coming here. Some brought drinking water, others brought bread. Some evacuees came to check on residents who were still trapped,” Mansha told RRI Voice of Indonesia.

Similar compassion came from volunteers. Arin, an Acehnese woman and volunteer with Human Initiative Indonesia, went directly into the field to assist survivors, even though her own family was affected by the floods in Matang Seping Village, Banda Mulia Subdistrict.

“I am also part of a family that was affected, but thank God I was entrusted to help other communities in Aceh Tamiang, especially in upstream areas where the impact is far more severe,” Arin said.

She noted that many residents lost their homes and were forced to sleep on bare floors. Basic necessities such as clean water, hygiene supplies, as well as clothing and shelter, remain urgent needs to help residents gradually restore their lives.

Despite these limitations, Arin witnessed extraordinary resilience among survivors, particularly mothers and children who had lost their homes. Assistance, though modest, was able to bring happiness and renewed hope.

“We met a mother who lost her husband just three months ago and now has to care for four children. Her home was gone, yet she remained strong and felt deeply helped by our presence,” she said.

Recovery efforts are also being carried out by the Aceh Tamiang Regency Government. Acting Regional Secretary, Syuibun Anwar said that the most urgent needs currently include access to clean water, cleaning equipment, and health support for survivors.

“We are confident we can rise again thanks to the concern of our brothers and sisters outside Aceh Tamiang. With togetherness and assistance from all parties, God willing, the people of Aceh Tamiang can recover,” he said.

The spirit of mutual cooperation was also reflected in the account of Bang Jules, a resident of Lintang Bawah Village, who described how residents worked side by side to save one another when the floods struck.

“We struggled together, not thinking about ourselves. From late afternoon until midnight, then taking turns until morning, we tried to rescue residents using makeshift boats,” he recalled.

Amid loss, grief, and hardship, the spirit of Aceh Tamiang residents has never faded. Support from volunteers across the country, tireless medical personnel, and government care has become the driving force for recovery from physical and emotional devastation. In the darkest moments, hope continues to shine, sustained by human resilience that chooses to endure, care for one another, and rise together.
