RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) has urged the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) to tighten oversight of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program amid concerns over food safety risks linked to the rapid expansion of service units.

The call was made during a hearing between Commission IX and the agency at the House complex on Tuesday, as lawmakers evaluated the addition of new operational units in the field. Commission IX stressed that stronger supervision is essential to prevent food safety breaches, particularly as the program serves vulnerable groups.

The discussion focused on Nutritious Food Service Units (SPPG), which are responsible for preparing and distributing meals under the program.

Lawmakers revealed that 68 percent of SPPGs have yet to meet Life Hygiene Sanitation (LHS) standards, raising alarm over potential health risks to beneficiaries such as schoolchildren and pregnant women.

“Why is it that 68 percent of SPPGs remain uncertified? This will become a serious problem if it is not resolved immediately,” Commission IX lawmaker Irma Suryani said, calling for swift action to ensure national food safety standards are met.

Commission IX also emphasized the need for real-time public oversight. Another lawmaker, Ravindra, urged the agency to establish an active complaints channel for beneficiaries to report problems directly.

“We expect BGN to provide an accessible and responsive grievance mechanism for beneficiaries. Regular monitoring and food sampling must continue to be strengthened,” Ravindra said.

Lawmakers warned that expanding service units must be matched by stricter supervision and accountability. They requested that BGN clearly explain its timeline for completing Sanitation Hygiene Eligibility Certification (SLHS) and halal certification for all SPPGs, including interim milestones.

While the agency has indicated that full certification may be completed by 2026, the DPR is seeking greater transparency and a detailed schedule to ensure progress can be monitored effectively.

The House said its recommendations were intended to improve the implementation of the national MBG program, which aims not only to address nutritional needs but also to support local economic activity. Lawmakers stressed that the program must be safe, scientifically sound, and broadly accepted by the public. (Naura Sofia/Lasti Martina)
