Indonesia Declares September 27 as National Comedy Day

KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia has officially marked September 27 as National Comedy Day, coinciding with the birthday of legendary comedian Bing Slamet. The announcement was made by Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, in a virtual address in Jakarta on Saturday (27/9/2025).

The Minister described Bing Slamet as a multitalented figure, celebrated as the “Father of Indonesian Comedy” as well as a singer and film star. He explained that the designation reflects the nation's appreciation for Bing’s lasting contribution to Indonesian arts.

The initiative, first proposed by Indonesian comedians including the Indonesian Comedy Artists Association (PASKI), was welcomed by the minister. “We at the Ministry of Culture fully welcome this decision as a milestone for the progress of comedy in Indonesia,” Fadli Zon said.

Comedy, he noted, has long been an inseparable part of the nation's cultural tradition. From traditional comedy groups to the recent rise of stand-up comedy, the art form continues to play a vital role in cultural expression.

The commemoration drew enthusiastic responses from comedians across Indonesia. PASKI Chairman, Jarwo Kwat, compared the occasion to a festive holiday for the comedy community.

Jarwo stressed that National Comedy Day should not be merely ceremonial. He urged stakeholders, including the government, to provide more performance spaces that allow comedians to flourish.

He further called for stronger collaboration between comedians and government cultural programs. This, he said, would support regional arts development and give comedy wider recognition in Indonesian society.

The Ministry of Culture expressed hope that the celebration will not only honor Bing Slamet’s legacy but also inspire younger generations to pursue comedy as a respected art form. With official recognition, National Comedy Day is expected to strengthen the role of humor as a cultural bridge in Indonesia’s diverse society.
