RRI.CO.ID, Cirebon - Cirebon’s inaugural Serabi Festival has turned a cherished culinary tradition into a platform for small‑business growth, showcasing how local food heritage can drive micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) development.
Held in Kesambi Subdistrict on Saturday, June 20, 2026, the festival was integrated into the city’s 599th‑anniversary celebrations. Mayor Effendi Edo emphasized that the rice‑flour pancake, long a staple of coastal Javanese communities, carries cultural values that extend far beyond its reputation as a simple snack.
“This Serabi Festival is an appreciation of our culinary richness. Serabi is not just a signature dish; it embodies patience, perseverance, and togetherness,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
The event was designed to generate direct economic benefits for neighborhood vendors by bringing home cooks and traditional merchants into a high‑visibility showcase. Edo noted that introducing and developing traditional culinary arts simultaneously strengthens MSME competitiveness and supports the local economy.
Kesambi Subdistrict Head Eko Budiyanto explained that this marks the first time Cirebon has dedicated a festival exclusively to serabi, gathering dozens of MSMEs under one banner.
Organizers highlighted the pancake’s slow cooking process over clay fire pits as a symbol of traditional values of diligence and community life. “Serabi teaches that something simple can become special if made with care. That’s the philosophy we want to promote,” Eko said.
Municipal planners hope the festival will inspire younger generations to appreciate the craftsmanship behind Cirebon’s culinary identity, ensuring that traditional food heritage remains relevant in modern society. ***
