RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Expanding its international footprint across Southeast Asia, the hit Indonesian horror-comedy film Ghost in the Cell has officially made its debut in Thailand. Screening since May 7, 2026, the film is being presented to local audiences with a full Thai-language dub, marking a tailored approach to international film distribution.
Producer at Come and See Pictures, Tia Hasibuan, explained that the decision to dub the movie was a strategic move designed to align with the consumption habits of cinema-goers in the region.
“Coincidentally, Thailand and Cambodia seem to be used to it. Many of their movies are indeed dubbed into their local languagesa,” Tia said during an event in Melawai, South Jakarta, on Saturday, May 16, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
The intricate process of voice acting and localization was entirely managed by the local distributor in Thailand. This localization method is highly valued as an effective tool to boost audience reception and lower barriers for Indonesian cinema entering foreign markets.
However, Hasibuan noted that this treatment is not uniform across all territories. "However, not all countries will be dubbed," she clarified.
According to Tia, distributors in neighboring countries prefer to retain the original Indonesian audio performance. Markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam will utilize the original language tracks coupled with localized subtitles rather than voice-overs.
The international push comes on the heels of massive domestic commercial success, with Ghost in the Cell locking in 3.2 million theater admissions during its box office run in Indonesia. This strong home-market performance has provided Come and See Pictures with the momentum needed to target a wider global audience.
The production house has laid out an ambitious roadmap, aiming to release the film progressively in 86 countries by the end of 2026. Following its current run in Thailand, the horror-comedy is scheduled to premiere in Taiwan this coming June. ***
