RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Calico cats are known for their stunning tricolor coats with white, black, and orange. “Calico” is not a breed—it’s just a color pattern that can appear in many types of cats. This means every calico cat looks different, and no two patterns are the same.
Behind their eye-catching appearance, calico cats carry fascinating genetic traits. Most calico cats are female. This is because the colors come from genes on the X chromosome, and female cats have two X chromosomes.
This allows them to have three colors in their fur. The presence of two X chromosomes allows the combination of three distinct colors to appear in one individual.
In spite of being rare, male calico cats do exist. This occurs due to a genetic anomaly in which a male cat has an extra X chromosome. However, most male calico cats tend to have reproductive issues.
Beyond science, calico cats are also surrounded by cultural beliefs and myths. In countries like Japan, these three-colored cats are often seen as symbols of good luck and are commonly associated with the figure of Maneki-neko. This belief continues to be part of popular culture today.
In terms of personality, calico cats are often described as having strong and distinctive traits. They are known to be feisty, vocal, and independent compared to other cats. However, their behavior is still largely influenced by their environment and how they are raised.
Another fascinating aspect of calico cats is that their coat patterns are never identical. Researchers explain that this is due to a biological process called X-chromosome inactivation, which occurs randomly during early embryonic development. As stated in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), “X-inactivation is a random process that leads to mosaic expression of X-linked genes,” resulting in each calico cat having a unique mosaic pattern, much like a fingerprint.
More than just pets, calico cats also play an important role in science. Their unique coat patterns are often used to help explain how genes function in living organisms. Through studying calico cats, researchers gain valuable insights into genetics and biological development in mammals.
