Black Cats, Different Meanings Across Cultures

In some countries, their appearance is considered a bad omen, particularly when they cross someone's path. However, this perception is not universal. In some cultures, black cats are instead associated with good fortune, prosperity, and even protection.

Several studies have also examined the relationship between people's beliefs and their perceptions of black cats. A study published in the journal Animals in 2024 identified what researchers call black cat bias, referring to the tendency of some people to perceive black cats more negatively.

However, the study did not find that belief in superstition in general was consistently responsible for this bias. Among certain groups, belief in witchcraft was instead associated with more negative perceptions of black cats. The researchers also found that this bias could become more pronounced around Halloween, when symbols associated with black cats, witches, and superstition become more prominent in society.

In Indonesia, black cats are also viewed in different ways. Some people associate them with bad omens, while others believe their presence can be a sign of good fortune or an approaching blessing. Similar differences can be found in other parts of the world. In some Western countries, for example, black cats are often associated with bad luck, particularly when they cross someone's path.
