RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Dunia Mencekam Studio and Santara production house have officially launched their latest film, Songko, a horror-thriller rooted in the rich folklore of the Minahasa people of North Sulawesi. Set in a remote village in Tomohon in 1986, the film explores a period of historical superstition and terror.
"Residents believe that a creature called the Songko has arrived to hunt for sacred blood in exchange for immortality," explained Santara’s creative producer, Avandrio Yusuf, in a press statement on Monday, April 13, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Yusuf conducted extensive research for the project, interviewing traditional leaders and locals in Tomohon to ensure the visual design of the creature, costumes, and linguistic nuances remained authentic to the region's heritage.
To capture the atmospheric tension of the 1980s, the production team took several significant steps, including the construction of on-location sets at the foot of Mount Lokon. Originally an empty plot of land, this custom village set remains standing today and has transitioned into a popular photo spot for local residents.
The production also prioritized cultural representation by ensuring that 60 percent of the cast and crew were recruited directly from the youth of Manado. This commitment to authenticity is further strengthened by the film’s regional vision, as it is helmed by director Gerald Mamahit, a Tomohon native whose personal connection to the setting adds a profound layer of cultural depth to the narrative.
Executive Producer Whisnu Baker noted that the film is part of a broader vision to elevate under-explored regional stories. “We want to bring local stories to a wider level, but still with strong authenticity,” he said.
The film features a seasoned cast, including Annette Edoarda, Imelda Therinne, Fergie Brittany, Tegar Satria, and Khiva Iskak. Following its initial gala premiere in Jakarta, the production team plans to hold a second premiere in Manado as a tribute to the community that inspired the story.
Songko is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on April 23, 2026. ***
