RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta – Residents of Kadisoro RT 07, Gilangharjo, Pandak, Bantul, Yogyakarta, have found a unique way to preserve their cultural heritage. Every Saturday Kliwon evening at 8 p.m., they gather for neighborhood administration unit (RT) meetings, dressed in traditional Javanese lurik attire.

Head of RT 07, Purnama, explained that the practice is intended to foster appreciation for Javanese culture, particularly the traditions of Yogyakarta.

“To preserve and love our culture, every resident attending the meeting is required to wear Javanese clothing. Even though it’s only during RT meetings, we hope this inspires others to continue nurturing Javanese traditions,” he said.

Initially, residents found the attire cumbersome, but over time they grew accustomed to wearing the striped lurik surjan, which carries deep philosophical meaning.

Lurik is more than a patterned garment; it symbolizes simplicity, honesty, and balance in life. The vertical stripes represent steadfastness, humility, and the connection between humans and the Creator.

By wearing lurik, residents are reminded to live simply, uphold honesty, and balance personal and communal interests. This philosophy, they believe, leads to a life of peace and prosperity. ***
