Indonesians in Shanghai Celebrate Independence Day with ‘Pesta Rakyat’

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Hundreds of Indonesians living in Shanghai and surrounding areas joined traditional games organized by the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Shanghai to celebrate Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.
Dubbed Pesta Rakyat (Folk Festival), the celebration featured traditional competitions including cracker-eating, tug-of-war, quizzes, and a game of putting strings into bottles. The event was held on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

“Although we are far from our homeland, we must continue to preserve the spirit of independence. Let us maintain unity, support one another, and spread the spirit of mutual cooperation,” Indonesian Consul General in Shanghai Berlianto Situngkir said in a statement on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Hundreds of Indonesians living in Shanghai and surrounding areas took part in the event, with participants showing enthusiasm for the competitions and prizes offered to winners.
The series of celebrations will continue with a Red-and-White flag-raising ceremony on August 17, 2026, which will be attended by Indonesians in Shanghai and nearby areas.

The KJRI Shanghai's jurisdiction covers Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui provinces, collectively known as the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), as well as Jiangxi Province, all located in eastern China.
Around 800 Indonesian citizens live within the consulate's jurisdiction, most of whom are students, businesspeople, and expatriates. ***
