RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and the United States are deepening collaboration in military engineering to strengthen disaster preparedness and build resilient infrastructure, reflecting a long-term investment in national security and humanitarian response. The initiative highlights how technical cooperation, traditionally seen as a support function, has become central to addressing increasingly complex disaster challenges.

The discussions took place on July 23 at the US Department of Defense between Indonesian Ambassador to the US Indroyono Soesilo and Assistant Secretary of the US Army Adam M. Telle, following earlier talks between Defense Ministers of both countries in April.

The focus was on enhancing engineering cooperation, disaster response capacity, and post-disaster recovery systems. “By combining the experience, technology, and innovation of both nations, we can build stronger infrastructure and ensure faster access to essential services when disasters strike,” Ambassador Indroyono said, as quoted by Antara.

As a country located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia faces frequent threats from earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and landslides. Strengthening ties with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is seen as strategic, not only for infrastructure development but also for accelerating humanitarian response.

Joint programs such as Pacific Resilience and Disaster Response Exercise & Exchange have already involved the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and international partners.

Future cooperation may include modular bridge construction, emergency route opening, river embankment projects, urban drainage systems, and joint training to enhance engineering capacity. In disaster management, the military engineering corps plays a vital role in mitigation, emergency response, and rehabilitation -- ensuring that both military and humanitarian operations can function effectively. ***
